At Sexsmith Physiotherapy, providing physical therapy in Sexsmith, Grande Prairie and area, we provide patient-centred care and focus on finding the cause of the problem so we can prevent recurring pain.

Back and Neck Pain

More than 50 percent of Canadians experience back pain or neck pain at some point in their lives. Both conditions can take a serious toll on the quality of our lives and are major reasons for lost work days.

Our experienced physiotherapists will work with you to ensure that we help to reduce pain and ensure that we determine the cause of your pain so steps can be taken to prevent its return.

Sprains, strains and fractures

Numerous injuries fall into the categories of sprains, strains and fractures. Sprains happen when excessive force is applied to a joint and damage results to the ligaments that hold the bones together. Common areas of the body to sustain sprains are ankles, knees and fingers.

Strains refer to the tearing or stretching of muscles or tendons. The tendons connect the muscles to the bones.

Fractures are cracks or breaks in bones. They occur when more pressure is applied to the bone than it can withstand. Commonly, fractures are the result of falls.

At Sexsmith Physiotherapy, we offer a course of therapy for fractures, sprains and strains to promote healing, reduce pain and restore functionality as quickly as possible.

Sport Injuries

Sexsmith Physiotherapy works with all levels of athletes, from weekend marathoners to established professionals or recreational sports participants.

We work quickly to reduce your pain and restore mobility so you are not sitting on the sidelines for an entire season. We will also prescribe series of exercises you can perform to help in keeping further injuries at bay.

Our customized programs of treatment are designed to get you back to the sport you enjoy as quickly as possible.

Repetitive Use Injuries

Overuse injuries impact everyone from athletes to workers to gamers. In fact, they occur in anyone who uses one part of their body in a repetitious manner. Carpal tunnel syndrome, bursitis and tendonitis are all examples of this disorder that means one part of the body is injured from over-exertion.

The pain is often focused on a joint and affects surrounding muscle, bone, tendon or bursa of the joint. Physical therapy is effective as a treatment for repetitive use injuries.

Upper and Lower Extremities

Both sudden and severe or chronic pain in the upper and lower extremities can dramatically impact your quality of life.

We work with effective therapies to quickly reduce inflammation and heal injuries so you can return to you normal level of activity as quickly as possible.

These injuries can include fractures and dislocations, ligament and nerve injuries, wounds and scars, and muscular pain.

Another source of upper and lower extremity pain are conditions like rheumatic disease and arthritis.

Postural Problems

Postural problems can be compounded when people overcompensate because of pain or injury and in the process create new problems. We can study your gait and determine the root cause of any postural difficulties, use therapy to correct them, and avoid more problems in the long term.

Pre and Post Surgical Rehabilitation

A series of research studies published in peer-reviewed scientific journals confirms that patients who receive physical therapy both before and after surgery recover faster and more completely than those who do not.

If you are scheduled for joint replacement surgery in particular, make sure to work physical therapy into your recovery plan. We will collaborate with your medical team and help you to increase your strength and activity and return to your normal level of activity faster.

Headaches

Chronic headaches can be debilitating, deterring people from their normal daily routines and causing great pain.

There are several kinds of headaches, such as tension and cluster headaches, sinus, and migraine. Sometimes a headache can also be a warning sign of a serious health issue.

Physiotherapy and relaxation techniques have been found in many cases to be successful in alleviating the pain of chronic headaches and preventing them from re-occurring.

Jaw Pain

Pain and problems in the head, face and jaw can be triggered by everything from trauma and stress to clenching or grinding teeth, arthritis or congenital issues.

At Sexsmith Physiotherapy, we will work to help you recover from craniofascial pain as well as temporomandibular joint dysfunction (TMJ). After working with you to determine contributing factors to your condition, we will deliver physiotherapy designed to reduce inflammation, restore function, and regenerate injured tissues.

Clients suffering from jaw pain may also experience tooth pain, neck or throat pain, dizziness, headaches and even numbness of the face and head.

Neurological Conditions

Patients recovering from diseases involving the central and peripheral nervous system can be assisted in the recovery of functionality and improved balance with our designated physical therapies.

We are also experienced in treating patients with head injuries, concussions, post stroke rehabilitation, amputation rehabilitation, multiple sclerosis, Parkinson’s disease, muscular dystrophy, and other conditions requiring neurological rehabilitation.

Motor Vehicle Collision Injuries

Following a motor vehicle accident, it is essential to have physical therapy to repair and strengthen damaged tissues. Delaying this step can prolong your recovery period.

Our physiotherapists will work with your medical team. We assess your injury and provide pain relief and therapy to reduce swelling. Our therapy will help to decrease painful muscle spasms and allow you to heal.

Massage Therapy

Our on-site registered massage therapist assists our clients to health with both therapeutic and relaxation massages. The benefits of massage therapy include improved range of motion, improved posture, reduced heart rate, improved circulation, increased endorphins and relaxation and stress reduction.

UBC Gunn Intramuscular Stimulation

We have specialized training in Gunn Intramuscular Stimulation, a unique form of dry needling designed to help patients who are suffering from acute or chronic pain. This therapy reduces muscle tension, promotes healing and increases your range of motion.

Dry needling involves the use of disposable acupuncture needles inserted into your skin and muscle tissue, but it has no similarity to acupuncture other than the tool used.

It is particularly effective in helping patients suffering from fibromyalgia or osteoarthritis of the joints, neck, back and shoulder pain and other chronic pain conditions.

Dizziness and vertigo

Dizziness and frequent falls, vertigo or migraines can all indicate problems with your vestibular system that serves as your primary balance system.

Our goal is to work with you to relieve your pain and dizziness and restore normal living as quickly as possible.

Dealing with muscular imbalances with a trained and licensed physiotherapist is important since small problems can be compounded with the heightened risk of falls that accompanies these symptoms.

Industrial Rehabilitation

Our experienced and licensed physiotherapists will work to provide rehabilitation services to injured workers and help them return to their jobs as quickly as possible.

Ergonomic Assessments

Our physiotherapists can examine a workplace and identify risk factors that will ultimately lead to injuries, minimizing claims and costs in lost time for employers. We also offer assistance in determining if a musculoskeletal disorder is likely work-related.
